How to Fix Resin Mistakes: Sand, Recoat & Save Your Piece 🛠️

A sticky corner, a hair in the glossy top, a bubble that cured right in the middle. Every resin artist has been there, and the good news is that most of these pieces can be saved. Knowing how to fix resin mistakes comes down to two simple skills: sanding and recoating.

In this guide we'll show you how to find the cause, when the resin is ready to sand, how to sand it properly and how to pour a fresh top coat that brings the gloss back. 🛠️

Wiping a cured epoxy resin surface clean before sanding and recoating

1. First, Find What Went Wrong

Before you grab the sandpaper, look at the defect. The cause tells you which fix you need:

  • Sticky or soft spots: scrape off the soft resin, fill, sand and recoat.
  • Dust, hairs or bubbles cured into the surface: sand them down and pour a fresh top coat.
  • Waves, dents or an uneven top: sand the surface level, then recoat.
  • A greasy, cloudy film (amine blush): sand it off, then recoat.
  • Light scratches or dull patches: polish them out. For heavy wear, add a thin new layer of resin.
Artline Tip: A sticky surface is almost never a "bad resin" problem. In most cases it's a mixing mistake: the wrong ratio, mixing too briefly or not scraping the walls of the cup.

2. Make Sure the Resin Is Fully Cured

Never sand resin that is still soft. Sandpaper will tear and smear it instead of leaving a clean, even surface. Artline Crystal, Honey and Extra Honey can be demolded within a day, but they need about 72 hours to reach full cure, and longer in a cool room.

If the surface still feels soft or marks easily under your fingernail, wait. If an area is still sticky after several days, it won't cure on its own: scrape the soft resin off with a spatula first. Our guide Why Is My Epoxy Resin Still Sticky? explains the causes in detail.

3. How to Sand Epoxy Resin Step by Step

Sanding removes bumps, dust and bubbles and gives the next layer something to grip. Work slowly and keep the surface wet.

  1. Protect yourselfWear gloves and a respirator. Cured resin dust shouldn't be breathed in.
  2. Clean the surfaceRemove dust, grease and fingerprints first, or the sandpaper will drag particles across and create new scratches.
  3. Wet sand the defectsFor bumps, dust or bubbles, start with wet/dry sandpaper around P400–P600. Keep the surface wet: water reduces heat and washes away the sanding dust.
  4. Check under raking lightDry a small area and look at it with a lamp held low. If you still see the defect, keep going before moving on.

Recoating or polishing? If you're going to pour a new top coat, an even, matte surface is enough: the fresh resin brings the gloss back. If you want to keep the surface without a new layer, continue through finer grits (P800 → P1000 → P1500 → P2000 → P2500 → P3000) and finish with polishing compound. Our polishing guide walks through it in detail.

4. How to Recoat Epoxy Resin for a Fresh, Glossy Finish

A thin new layer hides the sanding marks and gives the whole piece an even gloss in one step. Before you pour, the base must be fully cured, clean, lightly sanded, completely dust-free and perfectly level.

  1. Warm upWork at 22–25 °C and bring the resin to room temperature first.
  2. WeighMeasure resin and hardener at 2:1 by weight. Never change the ratio.
  3. Mix in two cupsStir slowly for 3–5 minutes, scraping the walls and bottom. Pour into a clean cup and mix 1–2 minutes more.
  4. Pour a thin layerPour over the sanded surface and spread it evenly, including the edges.
  1. Remove bubblesA light mist of Bubble Release Spray or a pass with a heat gun clears surface bubbles.
  2. Cover and waitCover the piece with a box or dome to keep dust off, but don't seal it airtight. Let it cure: 12–15 hours for Extra Honey, about 16 hours for Honey, 18–24 hours for Crystal.

How much resin for a top coat? Length × width × thickness (cm) × 1.1 = grams. A 30 × 30 cm tray with a 2 mm coat needs about 200 g. Or let our free Resin Calculator do the math.

5. Quick Fixes for the Most Common Resin Mistakes

Sticky spots. Scrape off the soft resin, fill any dents with freshly mixed resin, let it cure, sand lightly and pour a thin top coat.

Bubbles and dust in the cured surface. Sand them out until the surface is even, wipe off all sanding dust and recoat. Next time, protect the piece with a cover while it cures.

A greasy, cloudy film. This is amine blush. It isn't a resin defect: it forms when humidity is too high or the temperature changes during curing, and Extra Honey is the most sensitive to it. Don't wipe it with alcohol, as that can make it worse. Once the piece has cured, sand the film off and recoat.

Scratches and dull areas. Light scratches can be polished out. For deeper wear, sand and add a thin new layer. Extra Honey gives the most scratch-resistant finish.

Artline Tip: Keep humidity in range to avoid amine blush: up to 60% for Crystal, 30–40% for Honey and 20–30% for Extra Honey. If the air is damp, a dehumidifier helps, or choose Crystal for the top coat.

Save Your Piece, Then Prevent the Next Mistake ✨

Most resin mistakes are fixable: let the resin cure fully, sand until the surface is even and pour a thin fresh layer. The best fix, though, is prevention: work at 22–25 °C, weigh both parts, mix in two cups and keep humidity in range for your resin.
