How to Make a Stunning 3D Bloom Flower Coaster with Epoxy Resin

Learn how to create a beautiful 3D bloom flower coaster with epoxy resin using this beginner-friendly step-by-step guide. We'll show you how to achieve realistic flower petals, avoid common mistakes, choose the right materials, and create a glossy, professional-looking result at home.

What Is the 3D Bloom Technique?

The 3D Bloom technique is a popular epoxy resin art method that creates the illusion of delicate flower petals suspended inside clear resin. By combining tinted resin, white pigment paste, and carefully timed movements, you can achieve a stunning three-dimensional effect that looks like a blooming flower captured beneath the surface.

Unlike traditional resin art, the bloom effect relies on the way white pigmented resin interacts with clear resin at the right stage of curing. As the resin begins to thicken, the white pigment naturally spreads and forms soft, petal-like shapes, creating depth and movement without the need for painting or sculpting.

One of the reasons this technique has become so popular is that every coaster is completely unique. By changing the colors, the shape of the petals, or the way you draw the bloom, you can create designs inspired by roses, peonies, chrysanthemums, or entirely abstract floral patterns.

While the results may look complex, the process itself is beginner-friendly. With the right materials, proper timing, and a little practice, anyone can create beautiful bloom coasters that make thoughtful handmade gifts or elegant home décor.

  • Mixing cups
  • Wooden stir sticks
  • Precision squeeze bottle or piping bag
  • Toothpick or needle tool
  • Disposable nitrile gloves

✨ Optional Extras

  • Silicone work mat
  • Digital scale
  • Protective apron
  • Paper towels
  • Isopropyl alcohol for cleaning

Preparing for Your Project

A well-prepared workspace is the key to a smooth and enjoyable resin crafting experience. Before mixing your resin, make sure all your materials and tools are clean, organized, and within easy reach. The bloom technique is time-sensitive, so having everything ready will help you work with confidence.

💡

Ideal Working Conditions

  • Temperature: 22–24°C (72–75°F)
  • Humidity: Low to moderate
  • Workspace: Clean, dust-free, and level

Once your workspace is ready, place the silicone mold on a flat surface and prepare your pigments, alcohol inks, and shaping tool. This way, you can focus entirely on creating your bloom design when the resin reaches the perfect working consistency.

Step-by-Step Tutorial

Now that your workspace is ready, it's time to create your 3D bloom flower coaster. Follow the steps below carefully, and remember: the bloom effect depends on timing, consistency, and controlled movements.

1

Mix the Epoxy Resin

Measuring and mixing Artline Honey Epoxy Resin in a 2:1 ratio

Measure out Artline Honey Epoxy Resin in a 2:1 ratio (2 parts resin to 1 part hardener) by weight using a digital scale. Pour both components into a clean mixing cup and stir slowly and thoroughly for at least 3–5 minutes, scraping the sides and bottom of the cup. The resin has a working time of 30–50 minutes, so once mixed, you can work at a comfortable pace without rushing.

💡 Artline Tip: Stir gently to avoid introducing air bubbles. The high viscosity of Honey Resin means it holds its shape well — perfect for the bloom technique.
2

Pour the Clear Base

Pour a layer of clear resin into your silicone coaster mold. Fill the mold evenly, but leave enough space for the alcohol inks, white bloom mixture, background layer, and final finish.

3

Add Alcohol Inks

Add a few drops of alcohol ink onto the clear resin base. You can use one color for a soft, elegant look or combine several shades to create more depth and movement.

4

Prepare the White Bloom Mixture

In a separate cup, mix a small amount of resin with white pigment paste. The mixture should be opaque, smooth, and thick enough to hold its shape when applied.

5

Create the Flower Center

Using a precision bottle, piping bag, or small stick, apply the white bloom mixture in the center of your design. Start with a small dot or spiral — this will become the heart of your flower.

6

Shape and Draw the Petal Pattern

Use a toothpick, needle tool, or thin stick to gently pull the white pigment outward from the center. Work slowly and repeat the movement around the flower to create soft, petal-like shapes. Keep your movements light and controlled — pressing too deeply can disturb the resin layers and make the flower look muddy instead of delicate.

Then, draw lines from the outer edge toward the center of the coaster, passing through the concentric rings of color. Repeat this motion evenly around the entire surface to create symmetrical, leaf-shaped petals. The more consistent your spacing and pressure, the more defined and elegant the final flower will look.

🌸 Artline Tip: Work quickly but steadily — the resin should still be fluid enough to allow the colors to blend naturally as you draw each petal. If the resin has thickened too much, the lines may not flow smoothly.
7

Remove Surface Bubbles

Lightly mist the surface with Bubble Release Spray to help remove bubbles without disturbing the bloom design. Avoid spraying too much, as excess liquid can affect the surface.

8

Let the Coaster Cure

Cover the mold to protect it from dust and let the resin cure for 16–24 hours. Do not move the mold while the bloom is developing.

9

Add the Background Layer

Once the first layer has cured, add a background layer to make the flower stand out. You can use a soft white, pastel shade, or a deeper color depending on the look you want.

10

Add the Metallic Layer

Resin mixed with Mica Metallic Powder in a measuring cup Pouring metallic resin into the mold over the colored liquid colorant layer Metallic resin sitting on top of the liquid colorant layer just after pouring Metallic resin sunk through the liquid colorant layer after 10 minutes creating a layered depth effect

In a fresh mixing cup, combine a portion of resin with Mica Metallic Powder and stir until fully blended. Pour this metallic mixture into the center of the mold over the liquid colorant layer. At first it will sit on top — but because the metallic resin is denser than the liquid colorant, it will gradually sink through within about 10 minutes, pushing the color to the edges and creating a natural, layered depth effect.

Artline Tip: Don't stir or disturb the mold after pouring — let gravity do the work. The sinking effect happens on its own and creates a beautiful gradient from the center outward.

Common Bloom Technique Mistakes

The bloom technique is all about timing and consistency. Keeping these simple tips in mind before you start will help you achieve cleaner petals and more consistent results.

Pouring resin when it's still too thin
Wait until the resin reaches the right consistency — petals will hold their shape better.
Using a poorly mixed white pigment
Mix the white pigment thoroughly — a smooth mixture creates cleaner, more defined petals.
Using heavy or rushed strokes when shaping
Work with gentle, controlled movements — light strokes form delicate petals without disturbing the clear resin.
Overworking the flower design
Once the bloom starts to develop, let the resin do the work — stop adjusting and trust the process.
💡

Artline Tip

Every bloom flower is unique. Small differences in temperature, timing, and movement can create beautiful variations, so don't worry if your first coaster doesn't look exactly like the reference. Practice is the key to mastering this technique.
