How to Use Chameleon Pigments in Resin: 2 Techniques, 2 Effects ✨

Most resin colors remain the same from every angle. Chameleon pigments behave differently: as the light or viewing angle changes, new shades and metallic reflections appear across the surface.

In this guide, you will learn two ways to use the new Artline Chameleon Pigments with epoxy resin. Apply the powder directly to a silicone mold for a bold reflective surface, or mix it into resin for translucent shimmer and depth.

What Makes Chameleon Pigments Different

Artline Chameleon Pigments are reflective powders that shift between several tones as the finished piece moves in the light. Instead of creating one flat color, they add changing highlights, metallic depth and a different effect from every angle.

The collection includes five shades: Solar Orange, Emerald Green, Sapphire Blue, Amethyst Purple and Obsidian Black. Each shade comes in a 5 g jar.

The final appearance depends not only on the pigment but also on the color beneath it. Black or dark-pigmented resin creates stronger multi-tone reflections and a more dramatic metallic finish. White or pastel resin produces a softer pearl effect. When the pigment is mixed into clear resin, it creates translucent, candy-like color with shimmer throughout the pour.

You can use the epoxy resin you normally work with. In this guide, we demonstrate both techniques with Artline Honey Epoxy Resin because its medium viscosity offers good control during application. Whichever resin you choose, follow its recommended mixing ratio, working conditions, maximum layer thickness and curing time.

Technique 1: Brush the Pigment Directly into the Mold

This technique places the chameleon powder between the silicone mold and the epoxy resin. Once the piece is demolded, the pigment appears directly on its outer surface, creating a strong metallic shift.

💡 Artline Tip: Choose this technique when you want a strong metallic finish on the outside of the piece without adding pigment throughout the entire pour. The effect is strongest against a dark or black resin base.

Prepare the Mold

Make sure the silicone mold is completely clean, dry and free from dust. Small particles can interrupt the reflective finish and remain visible on the cured surface.

Apply the Chameleon Pigment

Pick up a small amount of Artline Chameleon Pigment with a soft, dry brush. Spread it across the inside of the mold in a thin, even layer. Cover the entire surface for a bold, chrome-like finish, or brush the pigment only onto selected areas. Remove any loose excess powder before pouring.

Prepare Your Resin

Measure and mix the resin and hardener according to the instructions for your chosen epoxy resin. For the strongest color shift, add a compatible black or dark pigment. For a softer pearlescent effect, use a white or pastel-colored base.

Pour and Let It Cure

Pour the prepared resin into the coated mold steadily so that you do not disturb the layer of dry pigment. Follow the recommended layer thickness and curing time. The chameleon effect will appear on the surface that was in contact with the silicone mold.

Technique 2: Mix the Chameleon Pigment into Resin

When Artline Chameleon Pigment is mixed directly into epoxy resin, the reflective particles spread throughout the pour instead of remaining only on the surface. This creates translucent color, soft shimmer and a greater sense of depth.

💡 Artline Tip: Add the powder little by little. You can always make the effect more intense, but too much pigment makes the transparency and final color harder to control.

Mix the Resin First

Measure and combine the resin and hardener according to the ratio specified for your chosen epoxy resin. Mix both components completely before adding any pigment. Scrape the sides and bottom of the cup. Prepare your pigments, molds and tools before mixing so you can work within the resin's working time.

Add the Pigment Gradually

Transfer the amount of mixed resin you want to color into a separate cup. Add a small amount of Artline Chameleon Pigment and stir slowly until evenly dispersed. A small amount creates a subtle transparent shimmer. Adding more produces a richer, more metallic result, but also reduces transparency.

Choose the Background Effect

Mix the pigment with clear resin for a translucent, candy-like effect. For stronger contrast, pour it over or next to a layer of black or dark-colored resin. A white or pastel base will soften the color shift and create a lighter pearl finish.

Pour and Let It Cure

Pour the pigmented resin into the mold or add it to your resin-art design. Follow the recommended layer thickness and curing time. Once fully hardened, remove from the mold and view under different light sources to reveal the complete color shift.

Which Technique Should You Choose?

Choose the brush-on technique when you want a bold metallic surface, clearly defined details and a strong shift on the outside of the finished piece. Mix the pigment into resin when you want shimmer throughout the pour, translucent depth and softer transitions between colors.

You can also combine both techniques: brush the mold first, then fill it with resin mixed with a different chameleon shade. This creates a reflective surface with another layer of shifting color underneath.
